As seen on the Carrots and Cake blog.

Hi! I’m Nita Sharda, Registered Dietitian and owner of Carrots and Cake Balanced Nutrition Consulting. I’m so thrilled that Peter has generously given me the opportunity to gush about his very own handmade line of gourmet sauces.

Much like others, my schedule is often bombarded with late night work hours, meetings, recipe development and hey, having fun, that some times cooking everything from scratch isn’t feasible. I’m a strong believer that Canadian’s should be spending more time in the kitchen making home made meals; however, I’ve also learned the value of having a flexible approach to what I eat (and, how I eat). This is especially true for my clients that are often living a high-speed and time-constrained lifestyle. Being able to cook and put together a meal ensures you have the ability to be self-reliant and make healthful choices but it can also create stress with the added pressure of feeling like everything should be made from scratch.

So, what is one to do?

You can make an educated and conscious decision to purchase convenience foods. Shocked are you? I can wholeheartedly and willingly admit that there are a number of stable “ready to go” convenience food items in my fridge and pantry. This typically includes low sodium vegetable broth, canned fruits, jarred pasta sauces and high fibre granola bars. And of the utmost importance to me is being able to purchase items from local producers. You know, the “small guys”.

Peter is one of those guys. He is lead by a vision and a deep desire to create a tasty product that can be functional, practical and well enjoyed. I’m particularly a fan of the Fresh Strawberry Balsamic with Basil sauce. I’ve enjoyed it with an almond encrusted salmon and even laced into a bed of quinoa for a fresh take on this nutritious grain. With such few preservatives and thickening agents, foods typically require a scant amount of the sauce to intensify flavor.

The next time you’re planning a trip to the grocery store or to stock up on pantry items; remember to be mindful of what it is you’re purchasing and from who. Find foods that you’ll enjoy falling in love with, without sacrificing nutrition.
